Maricopa Unified School District Robotics Teams Compete

Thanks to the efforts of the Maricopa Ak-Chin STEAM Foundation and the Foundation’s generous sponsors: Electrical District 3, Harrah’s Ak-Chin and the Ak-Chin Indian Community; the Maricopa Unified School District was able to form multiple robotics teams this year to compete at State-level Vex Robotics Competitions. This year the District is fielding three elementary level teams and one high school team:

  • Maricopa Elementary School – a returning team from 2013/2014 season
  • Pima Butte Elementary – a new team for 2014/2015 season
  • Saddleback Elementary – a new team for 2014/2015 season
  • Maricopa High School - a new team for 2014/2015 season

At a recent competition that was held on November 15th, robotics teams from both Maricopa Elementary and Pima Butte Elementary competed for the first time this year. Congratulations to the robotics team from Pima Butte who placed 4th overall and received the award for Best Engineering Design! Both Pima Butte and Maricopa Elementary teams are now qualified to participate at the State competition to be held on February 28th at Tempe campus of Arizona State University!  On January 17 another competition will be held in Queen Creek and all of the elementary and high school teams are planning to complete.

STEAM Foundation Coordinator Ms. Rachel Burno, stated “None of this would be possible without the support of our sponsors, our partners within the City of Maricopa and Maricopa Unified School District and our volunteers and coaches. Influencing change is a team effort that can only be sustained by the passion and engagement of all team members. We are very pleased to have you on our team!”
