Health Service Enterovirus Letter

On Monday December 1st, District Health Services’ staff members were notified that a Maricopa Elementary School student who was seen last Tuesday in the school’s health office and who was experiencing fever, coughing and wheezing, was diagnosed with Enterovirus.  Thankfully, the student has since recovered and returned to school. As a precaution the District’s Director of Health Services - Mrs. Marilyn Wyant prepared a parent letter that will be sent home today with each Maricopa Elementary  student. (See Attached) The informational letter provides important information related to the Enterovirus and specific guidelines to assist parents with prevention and treatment.

On October 17th, elementary principals began requiring mandatory hand-washing at their individual school sites at the beginning of the school day, before lunch and after physical education or recess to curb the spread of illness.  The Maricopa Elementary School staff followed this directive. Even our secondary schools were encouraged to have students begin the regime of hand-washing.  The District also placed an Internet link about the Enterovirus on the homepage that provides additional information for parents and community members.  As Mrs. Wyant stated in her letter to parents, “Please help us keep our schools safe and free of illness … Together we can limit your child’s exposure to the Enterovirus.”
