Saddleback Teacher Awarded Grant of $5,000

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona will be at an assembly at Saddleback Elementary on 5/14 to present a grant of $5,000 to teacher  Marami Abbadessa. The funds will be used for materials and programs aimed at fighting childhood obesity. Ms. Abbadessa won the grant for her participation in the "2015 Walk On Challenge." The challenge is a free nutrition and fitness program offered to fourth and fifth grade students across the state. The challenge for students was to meet the 5-2-1-0 goal on a daily basis in February 2015: 5 - eat five fruits and vegetables; 2 - limit screen time (TV, video games, computers) to two hours or less; 1 - get at least one hour of physical activity; 0 - avoid sweetened drinks, filling up on water instead. Th grants were based on how the teacher will use the grant money within the school to combat childhood obesity. More than 9,500 students in Arizona participated in February, and 180 fourth and fifth grade students participated at Saddleback Elementary. Congratulations to Ms. Abbadessa!
