Angela Ebner Finalist for Arizona Educator of the Year

(Maricopa)  On Friday September 25th, the Maricopa Unified School District was notified that Maricopa Elementary School teacher Angela Ebner was selected as one of the ten finalists for Arizona Teacher of the Year 2016.  In Mrs. Ebner’s own words, “I am in my eleventh year of teaching and I love working in many different educational settings. I have taught kindergarten, through fifth grade and multi-grade classes. My current teaching assignment is fifth grade in the Maricopa Unified School District. I am a National Board Certified Teacher, an Arizona Master Teacher, Vice President of the Maricopa Education Association, a Candidate Support Provider for National Board Candidates through the Arizona K-12 Center and a National Board Ambassador for Arizona. As an educator, my goal is to inspire life-long learning in my students and facilitate leadership and efficacy among my peers.”

Dr. Jennifer Robinson Principal of Maricopa Elementary School and herself a Nationally Board Certified Teacher explains the selection process, “Teachers may self-nominate, be nominated by a student, co-worker, administrator, school or district committee, friend or family member to apply for the award.  To be considered for the award, teacher candidates must submit a written application that is reviewed by a panel of judges consisting of educators, students and members of the business community. Ten finalists are selected from the written applications. The 10 finalists are asked to prepare a 15-minute DVD teaching in the classroom. The final selection process includes review of the DVD, an interview and an impromptu speech by each of the 10 finalists. Following that process, the Teacher of the Year is selected, four “Ambassadors for Excellence” are selected and five remain semi-finalists. All 10 are honored at the annual awards luncheon. The Teacher of the Year and Ambassadors have multiple opportunities during the year to make public appearances throughout the state, speaking to professional, civic, educational, parent and student groups. Former Teachers of the Year, Ambassadors and Semi-Finalists are ineligible to reapply for the award.”

The District is very proud of Angie’s accomplishments and we wish her well during each phase of this well-earned honor. For more information about the Maricopa Unified School District please visit our website at www.maricopausd.org.
