Results from 1st Annual MHS VEX Robotics Competition

The Maricopa High School (MHS) Engineering Club and the MHS Robotics Club hosted the 1st Annual Maricopa High School VEX Robotics Competition at the Maricopa High School Gym on December 12, 2015.  Thank you to the twenty teams that participated and all of the 40+ volunteers that made the event run smoothly.

The winners are as follows:

Design Award: Team da Vinci of Team Automata in Cave Creek, AZ

For a team that demonstrates an organized and professional approach to the design process, project management, time management and team organization. The winning team is able to describe how they implemented an efficient and productive design process to accomplish the project goals.

Sportsmanship Award: Techno Masterminds from Desert Vista High School, Phoenix

For the team that earned the respect and admiration of the volunteers and other teams at the event.

Judges Award: Maricopa Rams Eng. 1 from Maricopa High School in Maricopa

For the team the judges decide is deserving of special recognition. Judges consider a number of possible criteria for this award, such as team displays for special attributes, exemplary effort and perseverance at the event that may not fall under other awards, but are nonetheless deserving of special recognition.

Programming Skills: Team ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­da Vinci from Team Automata in Cave Creek.

For the team that scored the most points during programming skills portion of the competitions. This pits the team’s programming of the robot against the game field.

Robot (Driving) Skills: Team Shockwave from Desert Vista High School in Phoenix

For the team that scored the most points during the driving skills portion of the competition. This pits the team’s driving skills against the game elements on the field.


Tournament Champions-Winning Alliance:

Team Shockwave from Desert Vista High School, Phoenix—Team Captain

Team Lightning Robotics from Desert Vista High School, Phoenix

Team CG Cybercats from Casa Grande Middle School, Casa Grande


Teams work in an alliance of three teams. The team captains are the six highest scoring teams after the qualifying rounds.  Qualifies for CREATE U.S. Open Robotics Championship High School or Middle School Divisions and AIA Barrett Foundation Robotics State Tournament.

Excellence Award: Team Shockwave of Desert Vista High School, Phoenix 

The recipient of this award is a team that exemplifies overall excellence in creating a high quality VEX robotics program. It excels in many areas and is a strong contender in numerous award categories. 

This team qualifies for the Arizona VEX Robotics Competition High School State Championship, CREATE U.S. Open Robotics Championship High School Division and AIA Barrett Foundation Robotics State Tournament. 

Rankings after the qualifying rounds for Maricopa High School Teams:

11th: Rams Engineering I

14th: Maricopa Rams Club team

15th: Rams Engineering 2

17th: Rams Engineering 3

All MHS teams competed with an alliance in the Championship Round.
