MUSD Announces Future City Winners

(Maricopa) We are proud to announce the 2016 winners from Desert Wind and Maricopa Wells Middle Schools at the Arizona State Regional Future Competition held on Saturday January 23rd at Arizona State University. Sixteen teams represented Maricopa Unified School District at the competition and eight different teams won awards for their hard work. Many of these awards also came with a monetary prize along with a plaque that will be proudly hung in the respective school site’s blended learning classrooms.

 

The teams from Desert Wind are:

Best City Description: Rugsberg - D'Avion Cyprian, Elizabeth Barba, Jailynn Cannon (DWMS)

Best Scale Model: Volturnus - Connor Witte, James Daxton Redfern, Bryan Pick (MWMS)

Best Team Presentation: Gronn Vekkelse - Alysa Huffman, Henry McCloskey, Parker Hunsaker (DWMS)

Best Application of Quality Concepts to Future Cities: Ba Shoileir - Megan Hahn, Erin Hildick, Anabelle Dayley (MWMS)

Innovative Use of Infrastructure: Gexin: Emma Shrader, John Travis Daniel, Joseline Nowell (MWMS)

Excellence in Use of Building Materials: Tulevaisuus - Airen Fortunato, Sydney Anderson, Genesis Uriarte-Sandoval (DWMS)

Best Multimodal Transportation System: Volturnus - Connor Witte, James Daxton Redfern, Bryan Pick (MWMS)

Special Award for Project Management: Novos Comecos - Jaden Pyle (DWMS)

Teachers are Jen Szoltysik and Shannon Hull from Desert Wind and Robyn Rice and Joe Szoltysik from Maricopa Wells. Both schools also had help from engineers Gerry Hahn, Damon Hahn, Robb Witte and Christian Schrader.  Jennifer Szoltysik explains, “The success at this competition is the product of the blended learning environment at Desert Wind and Maricopa Wells. We utilize project-based learning that enhances the student's intellectual creativity. We are lucky to have such amazing students and the support of all of the parents in our program. We are thankful that the District supports the Blended Learning program at all of our schools.”
