(Maricopa) On Saturday, January 30, students from the MHS Theatre Company competed at the Central Arizona Festival of Theatre at Mesa Community College. Students competed in solo, duet, and group musical events as well as technical theatre. Below are the students and their scores.

  • Ashley Riecken (senior) competed in solo musical performance, earning a Superior rating from one of her judges. Ashley also competed in costume design, and earned an overall Excellent designation for her work on The Philadelphia Story.
  • Carlos Venegas (junior) earned Excellent ratings for his solo musical performance.
  • Nikolas Mase (junior) earned Superior and Excellent ratings for his solo musical selection (which included an operatic aria!)
  • Shelby Hanks (senior) earned straight Superior scores for her solo musical performance.
  • In their first competition, senior Patrick Decker and freshman Aleyna Call earned Excellent scores for their musical duet.
  • The students also performed "With Cat-Like Tread" from Pirates of Penzance (our fall musical) for the group musical performance. Actors included: freshmen Brandon Korritky and Aidyn Curtis; juniors Carlos Venegas, Nik Mase, Tyler Curtis, Dylan Stradling, Sarah Ledbetter, and Mahkai Ball; and seniors Seth Hendrickson, Ashley Riecken, Ashley Lynn, Shelby Hanks, and Maria Santillan.

In addition to these amazing performances, Shelby Hanks was selected to compete at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, NE this summer. This is an honor for those students who earn straight superiors from the judges. Please take the opportunity to congratulate these students on their work and dedication to musical theatre.

We hope to see you at our winter production of The Philadelphia Story this week - February 4-6 in the MHS Lecture Hall at 7pm. Tickets are $5 at the door.
