Senior Volunteers Share Childhood Experiences

Submitted by Kathleen Kelley 2nd Grade Teacher at Butterfield Elementary School

(Maricopa) For the second year in a row, 2nd grade students at Butterfield Elementary interviewed 50+ year-old volunteers from the community.  The interviews were conducted by teams of 3 to 4 students and the questions revolved around ‘what life was like when they (seniors) were 7 & 8 years old’.  Subjects like technology, games played and what chores they had to do were discussed.  The first of two meeting dates took place on Friday April 8th with over 40 volunteers attending and a second meeting is being planned for May 6th.  At the May 6th, students will present written reports to their volunteers and then complete a craft together.  2nd Grade Teacher Kathleen Kelley states, that the event was “a HUGE success … both the volunteers and students enjoyed the experience”.
