Community Members Visit Desert Wind Middle School Blended Learning Classes

(Submitted by Desert Wind Teacher - Jennifer Szoltysik)

(Maricopa) On Wednesday, September 13th, Maricopa VFW member Mike Kemrey came to talk to our students about POW & MIA Remembrance Day. He spoke about the more than 83,000 men and women who are still unaccounted for and also explained the symbolism behind each part of the Missing Man Table that was set up in our classroom. Several of our students as well as the Maricopa High School Air Force JROTC gathered at the ceremony that took place at the Veteran's Center on Saturday morning.

Mrs. Hull and Mrs. Szoltysik would like thank Representative Vince Leach and MUSD School Board President Patti Coutre for participating in Take Your Legislator to School Day on Thursday, September 14th. Representative Leach took time from his busy schedule to visit classrooms, talk with students and faculty about our education successes, needs and challenges at our school, and participated in a short civics lesson with our 7th grade students.

On Friday, September 15th, MPD Detectives Ari Cohen and Brian Brown shared their expertise in solving crimes with our students as they complete their first quarter crime scene project. The detectives spoke about what they look for when they are called to a scene, brought a case of evidence collecting equipment to show to our students and emphasized how teamwork plays an important role in solving crimes.

Mrs. Hull and Mrs Szoltysik commented, “We are extremely proud to live in a community that supports our schools. We are especially lucky to have community members come and talk to our students about how what they learn in school can translate to real life experiences.”

If anyone in the community has experience with engineering or putting together small motors, please contact Shannon Hull at shull@musd20.org, we will need their expertise for an upcoming project. ?
