Maricopa High School Theatre Students Excel at AZ Thespian Festival

(Maricopa) On Friday, November 17th and Saturday November 18th, students from Maricopa High School Theatre and Technical Theatre competed at the Arizona State Thespian Festival at the Phoenix Convention Center. This two-day event brought almost 3,000 students from all over the state of Arizona to compete as well as attend workshops and performances.

Student performances/competitions included:

  • Junior Alex Hurley, monologues from Death of a Salesman and Picnic
  • Seniors Jalen Reyes and Lisa Moore and juniors Kjirsten Lemon and Aleyna Call, group musical of "You're Going Back to Jail" from Bonnie and Clyde
  • Senior Collin Martin and junior Antonio Gonzales, duet musical of "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" from Kiss Me, Kate
  • Senior Britney Montgomery, solo musical of "Glitter and Be Gay" from Candide
  • Two teams of Technical Theatre students competed in the Tech Challenge, including events of knot-tying, costume quick changes, cord wrapping, prop switches, and cord wrapping.
  • The one-act event of “Tracks” by Peter Tarsi, with Seniors Collin Martin, Logan Spaulding, Rachel Knight, Carlos Aguilar, Adrian Perdomo, Ivie Keene, and Chaienne Zoller, and with juniors Taryn Story, Aidyn Curtis, and Antonio Gonzales

The MHS team also received recognition for the following:

  • The Tech Team took 1st place (against 64 other schools) in the knot-tying event.
  • Britney Montgomery competed in college and thespian scholarship auditions, and was honored with the Amy Bennett Musical Theatre Memorial Scholarship, one of the highest scholarship honors available. She also earned straight-superior scores from the solo musical event adjudicators.

The one-act event “Tracks” by Peter Tarsi will be performed for the Maricopa Community on December 14th at 7pm in the MHS Lecture Hall.
