Maricopa Wells Students - Winners at Copa Shorts Film Fest

(Maricopa) On February 16th through the 18th, the City of Maricopa hosted the 2nd Annual Copa Shorts Film Festival. The festival showcased short films from around the world in several different categories.  Several students from Maricopa Wells Middle School competed in the middle school/high school category. In total, three films by Maricopa Wells students were selected to be shown at the festival.  Those films included: The Inverted,Hysteria and The 5th Wish. The films debuted in front of a large audience in Theater 12 at Ultra-Star Entertainment Center on Sunday, February 17. Of those films, The Inverted, from MWMS was selected as the winner in the middle school category.  They were recognized at a festival wrap-up party the night of February 18th. The students responsible for production of The Inverted are: Kaden Rogers, Elena Antunez, Joseph Abel, Thomas Abel and Maverick Miller. When asked about the film, 8th grader Elena Antunez said "This was a fun project from filming on-set or in Ashfork, Arizona.  The Inverted was worth all of the time and effort that it took to create." Director, 8th grader Kaden Rogers stated "We feel we learned a lot by participating last year.  Though we did not win last year, we were excited to learn from our mistakes and progress with this film."

In addition to films, the Copa Shorts Film Fest organized three workshops that were held on Saturday February 17th from 9-11 am.  MWMS students learned to fly drones from experts and how to use Arizona's landscape for all different types of films.  Film Fest Director, Roger Gillespie and Executive Director Shelley Gillespie were very receptive to the young filmmakers and encouraged by the progress they've made in a short period of time. The Copa Shorts Film Fest is anticipated to return next February.
