Don’t be fooled by the size of Maricopa point guard Josh Johnson. He’s listed at 5-8, and is a little smaller than that, but he can do as much damage on a basketball court as any big man.

For the second year in a row, Johnson is the PinalCentral boys basketball Player of the Year.

In his senior season, Johnson was again dominant, averaging 29 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals per game.

Based on stats from MaxPreps, that would make Johnson the second-leading scorer in the state this year, behind Globe guard BJ Burries (30.2 PPG). It also places him third in the state in assists.
Johnson plays some of his best basketball when the stakes are the highest. During a Jan. 19 win over a top 10 Glendale Apollo team, he had 37 points and seven assists.
He had 18 points, five assists and hit the game-winning free throw when Maricopa upset then-No. 1 Phoenix Sunnyslope 49-48 on Jan. 9. In his final game in a Rams uniform in the play-in round of the 5A state playoffs, he had 31 points in a loss to Tucson Sahuaro.
