8th grade Promotion Expectation/ Requirement Letter
August 26, 2019
Dear 8th Grade Parents/Guardians:
The beginning of every school year is always an exciting time that is filled with hope, dreams, possibilities, and academic challenge. As we begin the 2019-2020 school year, we would like to communicate the importance of this year for your 8th grade student. He/she will be tasked with viewing this year (academically speaking) as a very critical time of preparation for the transition to high school. It is vitally important that each 8th grade student understands the concept of the high school transcript, the academic rigor of classes, and the transition to a school with a large number of students. With all this being said, our staff will set out to engage each student so that they are prepared to do their best through the first three semesters of their high school experience.
As you well know, this year is also marked with academic and behavioral expectations due to the traditional activities available for all 8th grade students. DWMS will provide the 8th grade class a promotion ceremony, a field trip opportunity, and the grade-level dance (normally held at the end of the year). Academic and behavioral expectations will be stressed for each student during the entire school year.
8th Grade Field Trip and Dance Expectations: (Effective Sept. 3, 2019)
Must be passing all classes.
No more than two referrals for unexcused tardies in any class.
· No more than ten unexcused absences per semester.
· No more than two instances of being assigned In-School Suspension (ISS) or Out-of-School Suspension (OSS).
· A student will not be able to participate if he/she is assigned OSS or ISS during the week when the events take place.
8th Grade Promotion and Ceremony Expectations: (Effective Sept. 3, 2019)
In order to qualify for participation in the 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony, each student must officially be promoted to the 9th Grade. The following represents criteria that may cause a student to be retained as an 8th grade student:
The minimal requirement for promotion is to pass all classes.
A failing grade in math may result in a student being retained.
A failing grade in math and any other core academic class (ELA, Social Studies, and Science) may result in a student being retained.
A student may be retained if their absence total is above 20 days for the entire year.
If the student displays significant behavior during the fourth quarter and especially before promotion week, the student may be removed from participation in the ceremony.
If a student is assigned ISS or OSS during the promotion date, the student will be removed from participation in the ceremony.
These expectations have been designed to help our students focus on academics and behavior. We look forward to a great school year! If you have any questions or concerns regarding the above stated expectations, please contact Assistant Principal, Mrs. Corbin or me at your convenience. Thank you for selecting Desert Wind Middle School as your school of choice for the 2019 – 2020 school year.
