On June 29, 2020, Governor Doug Ducey announced that start of in-person instruction
will be postponed until August 17, 2020 in order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
Maricopa Unified School District (MUSD) had a committee of educators meet since the
close of school to determine how to support all students and develop strategies for
online success. Special Education staff were members of the committee.

The MUSD Governing Board voted to delay the start of school and begin online
distance learning instruction beginning July 30, 2020. Appropriately supporting students
in online instruction requires a great deal of instructional planning and preparation. We
recognize online platforms in conjunction with video-conferencing is unfamiliar and that
all students, including students with special needs, might experience different
challenges than they may have with in-person instruction.

The delayed start of school gave an opportunity to provide staff with additional
professional development opportunities to support instruction.
