K-8 Boundary FAQs
1. Why is MUSD adjusting school boundaries?
MUSD continues to experience steady enrollment growth. Boundary adjustments help balance enrollment across schools and prepare the district for long-term growth.
2. When do the new boundaries take effect?
The new boundaries will begin at the start of the 2026–2027 school year.
3. How were the new boundaries decided?
Throughout fall 2025, MUSD hosted community meetings to share proposed boundary options and gather feedback. On December 10, 2025, the Governing Board formally approved the new attendance boundaries.
4. How do I know if my address is affected?
Updated boundary maps are available at musd20.org/boundaries. Families directly impacted by the changes are receiving communication by email, letters home, and phone.
5. Which school will my child attend next year?
Families impacted by the new boundaries will receive a personalized notification with the assigned school: Alma Farrell Innovation Academy or Pima Butte Elementary School
6. Can my child remain at their current school?
Most likely. Families may request to remain at their current school through Open Enrollment. Applications for priority enrollment must be submitted by January 9, 2026. Learn more at musd20.org/open-enrollment.
7. Is Open Enrollment approval guaranteed?
No. Approval is based on available space at the requested school. Applications submitted by the deadline receive priority consideration.
8. Will transportation be provided if we choose to Open Enroll?
Typically, per district policy, transportation for open-enrollment students is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. However, because AFIA offers specialized programming, the Transportation Director may grant permission for open-enrollment students to ride existing routes if space permits.
Please review the specific details below regarding our out-of-boundary stops and the registration process.
Designated Bus Stops
To support our families, we have established two primary pickup and drop-off locations:
- Maricopa High School (MHS): Located at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) on the south side of the building.
- Homestead Subdivision: Located at the intersection of Homestead Dr. and Continental, directly in front of the park.
- Note: For safety, students are encouraged to wait within the park area to remain a safe distance from the street.
Registration Process
To secure a potential spot for your student, please follow these steps:
- Register at the School: You must complete both your child's online registration and the open enrollment application for Alma Farrell Innovation Academy and have them both accepted.
- Submit the AFIA Open Enrollment Transportation form: You must complete and submit the transportation request form. Please be aware that once a bus reaches full capacity, parents will be responsible for arranging their own transportation. If a bus is full, you may contact the Transportation Department periodically to check if seating has become available.
9. What if we move to a different address before the school year begins?
School placement is determined by the residential address on file. If you move, please update your address with your school office as soon as possible so placement can be reviewed.
10. When will we receive details about open houses or meet-the-teacher events?
Schools will share open house dates and welcome events as we approach the 2026–2027 school year. Families impacted by the adjustments will receive direct invitations.
11. How will siblings or students with special needs be placed?
Siblings who live at the same address will typically be assigned to the same school unless a specialized program or grade-level configuration requires otherwise. Contact your school office with specific questions.
12. Will any programs or services change because of the boundary adjustments?
All students will continue to have access to MUSD’s academic programs, special services, and extracurricular opportunities. School-specific offerings will remain available based on each campus’s programs.
13. Who can I contact if I have more questions?
Families may contact their school office or the MUSD District Office for additional support. Contact information is available at musd20.org.
