Miss Karin Spilman

Miss Spilman was born in Troy, Michigan.  She grew up there until she turned 12.  During the summer after 6th grade, her family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona.  After graduating from Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, she went to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to pursue a teaching degree.  In May of 1998, Miss Spilman graduated from Augustana College (now University) with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education.

Upon graduating, Miss Spilman moved back to Scottsdale to find a teaching job.  Luckily, she found a job with the Scottsdale School District, and in the Fall of 1998, Miss Spilman began her first teaching year.  She had wonderful students at her school and enjoyed every educational minute of that year. Unfortunately for her, in November of that same year, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease (a form of cancer).  Miss Spilman made the most of it and thoroughly enjoyed shaving her head when the chemotherapy began to take most of it.

Less than one year later, Miss Spilman was declared in remission and has successfully remained there ever since (currently 20 years).  She continued to teach students ranging in ages from 3rd grade to 8th grade in computers.  In 2009, Miss Spilman moved to Maricopa, Az and began working at Maricopa Wells Middle School.  Santa Cruz Elementary School was her next school before she finally ended up here, at Desert Wind Middle School.  Last year, Miss Spilman moved to Surprise and work at Dysart Elementary School, but missed everyone so much from Maricopa that she moved back and is here to stay!

Beginning in the Fall of 2005, Miss Spilman began her GIS (GEOGRAPHIC Information Systems) Analyst Certificate program at Mesa Community College. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2009.

Miss Spilman enjoys traveling, and most sports, binge and movie watching, as well as cross-stitching.  In the past, she has traveled to Bermuda to participate in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training Marathon, and just recently, she has taken an Alaskan cruise, Caribbean Cruise to St. Thomas, Tortola, & Nassau; spent time in Seattle, Pennsylvania, Boston, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, Colorado, Nevada, Florida, Utah, and Idaho.  She currently is the advisor of the Close Up program taking interested 6th, 7th & 8th graders to Washington DC.
